Medical Elective Placement

Nepal offers a good placement for medical elective programs from well equipped large hospital to small community Health Centers. Hospitals with hundreds of beds and wide range of departments are mainly based in major cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan etc. Community clinics base in rural and countryside. Now days, there are many private hospitals and nursing homes are flourished in towns which  are running as research centers and teaching hospitals. The private nursing homes and hospital are affiliated  under different universities. Private hospitals are more expensive compare to government hospital; however;  it is believed they are provide better services.

We place medical students in Government under taking hospital like Teaching Hospital, Kanti Children Hospital, Bir Hospital and Patan Hospital and Charak Hospital (private) in Pokhara. Comparing to private governments hospital are more affordable to low income level people that provide various services like OPD, general Surgical, ENT, Cardiology, Obstetrics , emergency, Psychiatric, general medicine. As per students requirement they will enrolled in any departments. The times begin from patient visit round with a professor, his team, local counter and other foreigner students. After finishing round students will be based on related department by shadowing doctors. In additional times they will have a time to go library. .

As a student you will be:

Students will take 6 days program a week for 5 to 7 hours a day. Sometimes, medical colleges organize local and international workshop and symposium,  students can take a part in these program. After completing placement, they will be certified and signed in documents which have to be submitted in their university.

Orientation:

Our representative picks up program participants from the airport upon arrival in Kathmandu . You will go to Hands for Help office to introduce with staff member, code of conduct about Hands for Help Nepal and briefing about your project and placement.The orientation period goes appropriate to length of volunteering and necessities. The orientation will comprise these activities;

  1. Nepali cultural orientation, dos and dos not in Nepal
  2. Communicative Nepali Language Course
  3. Personal safety/health /communication system
  4. Sightseeing/ travel and tours information

Date and Duration:

  1. The program starts on the first and sixteenth of each month.
  2. You can volunteer from 2 weeks to 5 months in a calendar year.

Accommodation & Food:

Housing students will be staying at the hostel or host family. Our host family will provide two meals breakfast and dinner and two or more times tea. Students will get their own room or share with their friend if they come in group and share wash room with host family. Our host families are very helpful and experienced in hosting international students.

Travel and Tour:

After completing placement, if students are interested to take a part in Nepal exploration, we will organize these activities in nominal cost. The activities comprise trekking, rafting, jungle safari, travel around Nepal, paragliding, bungee jumping, meditation, Yoga course etc.

Placement Itinerary:

Here is a sample schedule how the activities will be organized. We would be glad to produce any other schedule as per students’ requirements.

  1. Day1 – Pick up from airport then transfer to the hostel
  2. Day2 – Short introduction about project and cultural issues and temple sightseeing
  3. Day3 – Taking classes of spoke Nepali language (if needed) visiting more temples then free time
  4. Day4 – Going to hospital, doing official work then introduce with Professors, start working
