Teaching English  in Nepal offers a truly delightful and enjoyable experience. This initiative plays a vital role in enhancing the English proficiency of Nepalese children. In certain instances, volunteers may lead classes independently when local teachers are unavailable. Their presence serves as both encouragement and support, motivating children to embrace new and diverse learning experiences.

Volunteers dedicate themselves to instructing school children for 2 to 4 periods each day, with each period lasting 45 minutes. Nepalese children typically commence their schooling at the age of 5, starting from grade 1. Volunteers engage in teaching activities six days a week, with Saturdays designated as a day off. Additionally, schools adhere to public holidays according to the Nepal government calendar, resulting in closures during festivals and holiday periods.

Class sizes vary depending on the school, typically accommodating around 10 to 15 children in each class.

Volunteers play a crucial role in assisting with schoolwork, teaching activities such as singing and dancing, and organizing various creative pursuits like games, painting, and drawing. Periodically, volunteers have the opportunity to take the children on excursions, including picnics, visits to the zoo, amusement parks, and even swimming outings.

By volunteering in this program, you actively contribute to the development and growth of Nepalese children, leaving a positive imprint on their lives and fostering a genuine love for learning and creativity.

As a volunteer, you will be:

Orientation:

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, our representative will warmly welcome you at the airport and accompany you to a hostel where you will be staying during your initial orientation period. Subsequently, we will take you to the Hands for Help office, where you will be introduced to our staff members. During this time, we will discuss the code of conduct for Hands for Help Nepal and provide you with a comprehensive briefing about your project and placement.

We understand the importance of acclimatizing to an entirely new and unfamiliar environment, so we arrange a pre-placement orientation that can last from a few hours to several days, depending on the duration of your project. This orientation period is designed to boost your confidence and help you adjust to the extreme cultural differences you may encounter during your stay in Nepal. Throughout the orientation, we provide you with essential information about your specific placement and offer guidance on how to navigate new cultural issues effectively. Some of the activities we organize during this period include:

Nepali Cultural Orientation: This session will provide you with insights into Nepali culture, traditions, and customs, enabling you to better understand and appreciate the local way of life.

Dos and Don’ts in Nepal: Understanding the dos and don’ts in Nepal is crucial for ensuring you have a respectful and positive experience during your time in the country.

Communicative Nepali Language Course: Learning basic Nepali phrases and greetings will prove invaluable in your interactions with locals, making your experience more immersive and enjoyable.

Personal Safety, Health, and Communication System: We prioritize your safety and well-being, and during this session, we will provide you with tips and guidelines to ensure you stay healthy and safe during your stay. Additionally, we will familiarize you with the communication systems available to you while in Nepal.

Sightseeing and Travel Information: Nepal is a beautiful country with many breathtaking sights to explore. We will offer you information about travel and sightseeing opportunities, allowing you to make the most of your time outside of your volunteering activities.

Our pre-placement orientation aims to prepare you for the enriching experience ahead, fostering cultural understanding, and equipping you with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in Nepal.

Date and Duration:

1. The program starts on the first and sixteenth of each month.
2. You can volunteer from 2 weeks to 5 months in a calendar year.

Schools tentatively remain closed on these dates:

1. 17th to 27th October-The biggest festival, Dashain
2. 29th Dec to 26th January-Winter Break
3. 30th March to 15th April-Final Exam
4. 15th June to 15th July-Summer Break

School holidays, festivals, and academic years halt classes. We recommend you switch your placement to other projects like Teaching at Buddhist Monasteries and Orphanage Program. Or organize a tour and trekking program to explore Nepal.

Accommodation:

Volunteers will be living in a hostel or host family after arriving in Kathmandu. In placement, you will be staying with the host family who will give you a room. Host family allots a room in which you expect a classic level. All our placements host families have a 24/7 power supply even some have internet WIFI.

Food:

In placement, host families prepare food for volunteers. You expect Nepali foods Daal (lentil soup), bhaat (rice) with vegetables two times a day. Most of the meals with host families are organic. If they have buffalo or cow they will offer you non-pasteurized milk. Usually, the host family eats food at 8:30 am and 7:30 pm at noon they provide you snacks that would be puff corn, beaten rice, noodles, etc.

Excursion:

We will organize temples and heritage site visits for volunteers in the pre-placement orientation phase.

1. Day 1 – visiting monkey temple (a famous Buddhist stupa on the peak of hill swayambhunath) and Kathmandu Durbar Square where old palaces are made by Lichchhabi, Malla, and Shah Dynasties.
2. Day 2 – Visiting the biggest Hindu Temple the Pasupati Nath and the world’s Biggest Buddhist Stupa Baudha Nath
3. You will have time to explore the location around placement. The local coordinator or host family will escort you to explore the village.
